Pioneer Day

So Utah celebrates this weird little holiday. It's called Pioneer Day, and actually it's not little at all, it's like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade meets 4th of July but all the floats and events are Mormon related. People camp out a full day in advance for this parade. Here are some pics from the Days of '47 Parade.

Hit and Run

One-year-old Vixita Maribel Garcia was killed in a hit-and-run accident in the curb of the street during a family party on Superior Peak Drive in Taylorsville. The suspect may or may not know she ran over the small child.

Ironic this happened the day after discussing the ethics of taking photos of families who have lost someone/had their house burn down. I usually choose shoot over not shoot unless they say something or it's obvious they are upset with me. This family seemed fine with my presence and some of them ever talked to me after I had been there an hour.

The List

There has been hysteria in the Hispanic community in Salt Lake City this week over a list was mysteriously compiled of supposed illegal immigrants in the area and threatening phone calls were made to some families. In response many Mexican immigrants flooded the Mexican Consulate to get their passports and or to seek advice out the list. The story is here: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700048688/2-state-workers-compiled-list.html

Life Skillz Graduation

I got to go to jail 2 weeks ago and attend a Life Skillz class graduation. The inmates all seemed very grateful for the program, and several of them actually cried when they talked about the class and received their diplomas.

Home Life

I found a bird stuck in the netting we put up to keep the chickens out of the garden. I freed him shortly after taking this photo. This is my landlord/housemate Babs checking the feathers on the underside of one of our chickens.

Star Wars

Jayson Sydenham, 5, center green lightsaber, plays a pretend game of Star Wars with his new friends he met while waiting for the fireworks display to begin at Sugarhouse Park in South Salt Lake City Saturday, July 3, 2010. Sarah A. Miller, Deseret News

I found these kids near the glowstick tent under a tree engrossed in a game of Star Wars. These kids were really in their own little world and had no idea I was under the tree with them.
